Understanding Chatterbook & the NDIS

Chatterbook is a paper-based communication planner designed to support clear, consistent documentation across families, support workers, and support teams. It helps ensure everyone involved in a person’s care is informed, aligned, and working toward shared outcomes.
While simple in format, Chatterbook supports several key NDIS aligned goals including participant centred care, improved collaboration between support providers, and consistent tracking of daily routines and progress. It’s especially valuable for individuals with complex needs or limited communication, helping to strengthen the quality and reliability of everyday support.

Can I Claim Chatterbook Through the NDIS?

In many cases, yes. Chatterbook may be claimed through your NDIS plan depending
on how your funding is managed and how your supports are set up. It may be
purchased using Core Supports, or in some cases under Low-Cost Assistive
Technology.
Chatterbook is often used as a communication and planning aid that supports daily living and ongoing care. Many families who self-manage or plan-manage their funding choose to include tools like Chatterbook when they support their broader
goals. We encourage you to speak with your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator
to confirm which category is most suitable for your individual plan.

Who Is Chatterbook For?

Chatterbook is made for individuals who thrive when their support is clear,
consistent, and shared across the team. It’s especially helpful for people with limited
or non-verbal communication, those supported by multiple people throughout the
day, or anyone who relies on familiar routines to feel safe and understood.
Whether support is happening at home, at school, in respite, or out in the community,
Chatterbook creates one simple, central space where updates are shared, teams
stay connected, and care feels calm, coordinated, and truly person-centred.

How Chatterbook Supports NDIS Goals

Chatterbook makes communication easy, natural, and part of daily care—so everyone stays in the loop. By capturing routines, updates, and changes as they happen, it reduces misunderstandings and helps support workers feel more confident and connected. This everyday “chatter” builds a clear record over time, supporting NDIS progress reviews and keeping care consistent across different people and places. Most importantly, it helps ensure the person’s voice, needs, and preferences are always understood.

What to Provide if You're Making a Claim

Claiming Chatterbook through your NDIS funding is usually simple. You’ll just need
your invoice and a short explanation of how Chatterbook supports everyday care. Many families highlight how it helps improve communication, support routines, and keep things consistent across the team. If your plan is self-managed, you can claim directly through the NDIS portal. If you’re plan-managed, your Plan Manager will handle it for you using the invoice. Need a little help?
